A Virtual Gym to Make Children and Teens Sweat

The downtown Fargo YMCA has opened its XerZone, a virtual gym devoted to computer games that make children and teens sweat. Health experts hope the games also will help curb childhood obesity.“Technology is where it’s at now,” said Shelly Connelly, health and fitness director at the YMCA. “So many kids sit at home playing games and you just see their little thumbs moving. We want to see their whole bodies move.”The new video games known as “exer-games” replace traditional joysticks with tools that promote full-body movement. Kids jump or dance on pads. They wear belts that track their movements on a screen.
